The Possibility of More, Part IV - Student Responses
By midnight Sunday, 9/13/09, there should be student responses explaining their projects and what they'll be committing to in class. So, instead of reading it from me, please go to my American Lit blog and see their wonderful ideas for yourself. I also attached the full version of my "The Possibility of More" essay.

As I read through the student responses to your questions, I see a lot of motivation there, which is heartening. So it's not a question of motivating them--they are honored to have been given the chance to take a risk. Now the question becomes how to help them contain and express their motivation. The challenge here is logistics: finding people to help guide them forward in their projects, and the time and energy to be able to really take in their final presentations and offer some appreciation and feedback. This will require a team effort as it is beyond the capability of one person.
You might find other teachers, parents or even students who are able to help you host a "Putting it all together" day or night time event in which students can talk through their ideas with some support. I can see pizza here and that always inspires creativity. Sessions like this could be some of the best learning of the course.
And you'll want to use that same team and structure to provide enough time, space and energy to take in the presentations. By building in these logistics, the burden of witnessing and offering support and feedback to all these young people will not fall solely on you.
You have a lot of supporters who will be honored to be a part of this. Find a way to welcome and use their talent. Let it be a community who invites these young people forward.
Nice work.
